"We asked you what you wanted most. Now we're giving it to you."

The Gleaners by Jean-François Millet, 1857

We are delighted to officially announce the launch of the National Gleaning Network, thanks to funding from MG Marketing Charitable Trust to help us set the first milestone of the National Gleaning Digital Platform.

The MG Trust is a registered charitable trust run independently from MG Marketing but is closely supported by the co-operative. It focuses on providing funding to projects and initiatives which have a positive impact on the horticulture industry.

Please contact us if you'd like to learn more and are keen to join our National Gleaning Network.

"Gleaning is such an ancient practice that values the inherent value of kai and people." by Tric Malcolm, Pou Arahi at Kore Hiakai ero Hunger Collective

What is 'Gleaning'

"Gleaning is the act of collecting leftover crops from farmers' fields after they have been commercially harvested or on fields where it is not economically profitable to harvest."

Gleaning is also our keystone to help reduce on-farm food loss, which according to studies by Dr Lisa K Johnson, "there's about 45% of food has never left the farm. Because they're not pretty enough, less appealing to our perfect beauty standards."

Together we're Stronger.

Our vision of The National Gleaning Network also happens to be the motto of MG, "Together Stronger". We know you're waiting for this moment, and we got this.

Taiao – a Māori concept about balancing the relationship between climate, land, water and living systems – is a great way of expressing what we need to move towards.

"To achieve this, we all need to take responsibility and do our part, making the needed changes to our lives and businesses. With support from our science sector, we can develop modern, more sustainable growing systems that will be a better fit for our country and the future world. " by Barry O'Neil, President of Hortnz *
